The expansion work on the airstrip simulating an LHD deck within Ie Jima Auxiliary Airfield is steadily progressing. It is believed that this construction is in preparation for takeoff and landing training of state-of-the-art F-35 stealth fighters , which are to be deployed from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in 2017, and MV-22 Osprey vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Construction work began on August 28 this year, and is scheduled for completion in late August next year.
On November 28, Ryukyu Shimpo took photographs of the construction with a small RC helicopter. From the photographs it can be confirmed that preparations on the simulated LHD deck are progressing, and gravel has been spread for the expansion. There are circular raised points of ground, likely for helipads.
The construction was included in the 2015 U.S. Marine Corps Aviation Plan, and is supposed to support Osprey training. Aside from the simulated LHD deck, around 2013 land was tendered for quadrilateral helipads at four points, and for unpaved helipads. It is expected that there will be six helipads in total.
Once construction on the simulated LHD deck is completed, the plot is estimated to be approximately 107,000 square meters, about twice the size it was before, and will measure more than 800 meters across. The U.S. military plans to begin using the completed features halfway through 2017.

【伊江】米軍伊江島補助飛行場内で強襲揚陸艦の甲板を模した着陸帯「ＬＨＤデッキ」の拡張工事が着々と進められている。拡張工事は、２０１７年に岩国基地に配備予定の最新鋭ステルス戦闘機Ｆ３５と垂直離着陸輸送機ＭＶ２２オスプレイの離着陸訓練を行うためとみられている。工事は８月２２日に始まっており、工期は来年８月末まで。
琉球新報社が１１月２８日、小型無線ヘリで工事の現状を撮影した。工事は海兵隊が１４年１１月に策定した「海兵隊航空計画２０１５」に記されている。オスプレイについてはホバリングや離着陸訓練に対応するものとされる。
写真では、奥の方で「ＬＨＤデッキ」を模した着陸帯の整備が進み、砂利が敷き詰められている様子が確認できる。手前で丸く盛り土されている場所はヘリパッドの整備とみられる。「ＬＨＤデッキ」からさらに奥には、１３年ごろに供用が確認されている四角形のヘリパッド４カ所と舗装されていないヘリパッドが確認できる。全部で６カ所あるとみられる。
「ＬＨＤデッキ」の工事後の着陸帯の敷地は約１０万７千平方メートルと約２倍になり、幅は８００メートル超となる予定。米軍は１７年半ばの利用開始を予定している。
